What Should You Be Aiming For When You Move?
- Planning ahead, create a checklist.
- What is not going to make the journey with you? Clear out the clutter.
- Start a moving folder with all the important info in 1 place.
- Start packing in advance, especially the things you will not be using for the next 2 3 – 6 months.
- Book your move early. You will not only be avoiding disappointment but also high prices when you plan your move in advance.
- Have you found your new home on the other side? What can be done to get the utilities sorted before you move in. This includes Wi-Fi providers, security companies and changes to your insurance premiums.
- Essential items – before you move, the night before make sure you have the key items with you that you will need on moving day. This may include cellphone chargers, battery banks, ID Cards, Bank Cards, medications, car keys, house keys, remotes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, favourite soft toys for your kiddies, moving quotes and addresses, insurance policies, and more.
- Keep extra boxes and packing tape you will need it. The last-minute stuff you pack takes longer than you think and you may need more boxes and packing tape, markers and more.
- Get the right size boxes – no box should be too big or too small. The right size box for the stuff you are moving is ideal. Boxes should not be too heavy otherwise they will break. Avoid having major spaces in big boxes. Towels, pillows and linen can be used effectively to secure precious items.
- Moving trolley – if you are moving your own stuff a moving trolley will be extremely useful. You do not want to get an injury now. Also moving ramps are handy and your move will go quicker too.
- Pack the heavy items at the bottom of your boxes and the lighter items at the top. Remember to use linen in-between bigger bulkier items that need to be protected during your move.
- Pack room by room – it is tempting to mix a little bit of kitchen with a little bit of bedroom. It will be easier to offload boxes per room and you will already have done so many steps on the day. Keep your boxes in a room-by-room order.
- Label your boxes. At the very least mark the main bedroom or lounge. Boxes can be offloaded on the other side by room order. Also in this way, you can keep the contents of the boxes off-limits. You can keep a little master list of what went into each box so if you are in need of the coffee machine it will be easier to find on the other side.
- Secure your boxes well. Packing tape is your new best friend. If you are buying boxes consider getting a packing tape dispenser. It will be a great investment. Secure your boxes well even if you are moving short distances.
- Special crates – especially if you have expensive artwork. Place cardboard or packing tape between these special items.
- Kitchen essentials – your kitchen has all sorts of wonderful stuff. Hard, soft, pointy, sharp, big and bulky and breakable. Go slow in the kitchen and consider bundling similar items.
- Wardrobe wonders – are you planning on packing your wardrobe as a hanging wardrobe or are you folding your items? How will you pack your shoes? And when you pack jewelry how will you pack those? Ziplock bags work well and so do toilet roll holders.
- Pack the expensive stuff separately and a little differently. TV’s sound systems need extra care and attention. Quilted solutions our double boxing works best.
